Class Information
Communication
All students have a school diary. Home Learning, teacher messages and notice reminders will be written in daily. Parent messages and absences can also be written here. If students are sick or going to be away, please let us know with a diary message, phone or text message to the school office. If your child is going to be absent for more than three days, please contact the office.
Our school uses Google+ and Skoolbag to communicate with the Ardtornish community. If you are not connected to Google+, please contact the school.
Classroom Management
The students in Room 21 have created our classroom behaviour and learning expectations. These are centered around our school Values:
- Act Responsibly
-Respect Others and Property
-Follow Adult Instructions
- Act Safety
- Do Your Best
Students may need reminders when conducting themselves in our learning environment. Some students may also need some time away from the class to think about how they are conducting themselves and the impact it has on their learning and others' learning.
Communication
Each day your child will bring home their Communication Folder. Your child’s bag will contain their diary, reading recording book and library/ independent reading books. At times notices will be sent via paper via this Communication Folder. Please check your child’s bag daily.
Brain Break
Brain Break occurs daily around 10am. The morning sessions are long and often children get hungry between breakfast and morning recess. Only nutritional foods that are raw, clean and easy to nibble on such as fruit and veggies. Please no sweets, chips sandwiches etc for Brain Break. Children will be able to keep their own drink bottle in the classroom. Water only, not juice or cordial.
Classroom Supplies
Could you please donate one or two boxes of tissues to the classroom to share?
Nuts
Ardtornish Primary School is a nut aware school. Please do not send any nuts or nut products to school.
School Times
As explained in the first School Newsletter, the school day starts at 8:50am and ends at 3:15pm. Primary students who arrive between 8:35am and 8:50am will be supervised in the Primary Courtyard between rooms 6 and 11. If your child arrives after 9.00am they must report to the front office before coming to class.
Before school children are able to come inside and unpack their bags when the first bell goes at 8:35am. The students then need to go outside to play until the bell goes. If it is too hot or too cold, the children are able to stay inside and read/draw quietly.
Clothing
All students are expected to be in full uniform every day. Please clearly label all clothing and hats so we can find the rightful owner. Please be aware that your child will need their hats each day in Term one and Term 4 as our school has no hat – no play policy.
Volunteers
Volunteers are an important part of our class learning. If you are willing to volunteer, please make sure you have your DCSI clearance and have done the volunteer training prior to volunteering. Please see the front office if you are unsure if you have the right certificates.
2019 Teachers
Specialist teachers contributing to your child’s learning include:
Liz Gehling - Science
Lester Halliday – Physical Education
Mel Baldock – Japanese
Anne O’Dea – Music
Jill Woolley – Pottery (5 weeks)
Canteen
Lunch and recess orders are available every day except Monday. Bags are available for purchase from the canteen.
Hats
Hats are necessary for outdoor activities during Terms 1 and 4. Our school has a ‘no hat, no play’ policy. Children without hats are required to sit in a shaded area for outdoor activities including play at recess and lunch times to ensure sun protection.
Banking
The Commonwealth Bank provide a student banking service each Thursday. What a great way to help children develop their skills in money management.
Library Borrowing
All children are encouraged to borrow from our great Resource Centre before or after school as well as during our scheduled Library time each week. Students are given guidance in choosing suitable books. As part of our English Programme, all students complete the Premiers Reading Challenge and the 40 Book Challenge. It’s our goal for the entire class to complete the Premier’s Reading Challenge by the end of this term.
Home Learning
It’s important for children to develop a routine to complete any homework or unfinished work. Our homework focus is reading for 20 minutes, learning spelling words and times tables. At times, other work may be set or require finishing.
Your support in ensuring a quiet space, free of distractions and promoting positive attitudes is invaluable and assists in developing life-long learning habits.
Pigeon Holes
Each student has a ‘pigeonhole’ where notes are placed, books are returned etc. As part of our daily routine it is the children’s responsibility to check their pigeon holes regularly, especially the beginning and end of each day.
Diaries, Homework Books, Notes and other communications for home are placed in the students Communication Folder to be taken home and returned to school the following school day.
Upcoming Events:

- Pottery: Term 1 Weeks 4, 5, 6, 7 & 8. Tuesday afternoons.
- Adare Camp Rooms 21, 30 & 31- Term 4 Week 5 11th November - 13th November
